National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to celebrate Indigenous peoples’ contributions and cultures. The Assembly of First Nations first called for such a day in 1982, releasing a statement of support, which was later adopted and promoted by the Canadian Government officially in 1996. Here in Toronto, there are many celebratory events that we invite you to participate in and engage with across the city. IILF was intentionally set to end on June 20 so that participants could celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with us if they have the capacity and the desire to do so. There are a number of events across the city that we would recommend that you check out if you plan to stay for the festivities!
National Indigenous Peoples Day is on June 21, 2025, the summer solstice. For generations this day has been significant to many Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island as the longest day of the year.
